Tens of millions of acres of America’s Western Forests at risk of catastrophic forest fires. The Black Hills of South Dakota battles 100 forest fires every year. The situation is even worse in Montana, Colorado and California. In just two weeks, forest fires burned an area of California’s forests greater than the state of Delaware.
We have an engineering solution for this problem.
At our plant in Rapid City, South Dakota, we will be removing over 180,000 tons of diseased, fire-prone trees – every year – helping to restore health to this beautiful forest.
EcoTech Fuels, LLC (ETF) is a privately-owned renewable fuels company, co-owned by Plant Process Group (“PPG”) League City, TX, a proven leader in the GTL space. Our team of experts has the field-proven capability for converting biological and carbonaceous waste materials, including woody biomass, into advanced synthetic fuels. ETF’s Black Hills Advanced Synfuels project in Rapid City, SD, will convert 500 tons per day of woody biomass from the Black Hills National Forest into 1150 barrels per day of advanced synthetic diesel (the “Project”) .
ETF’s partner and co-owner, PPG, has perfected its Fischer-Tropsch (GTL) technology over more than 40 years of experience converting a variety of waste products to advanced synthetic fuels. PPG is the gas-to-liquids, reforming and hydrotreating engineering provider for similar facilities including one in Oregon, where PPG replaced the original non-performing technology. https://www.plant-process.com/renewable-fuels.
Construction / O&M
MMC / New-Com, Las Vegas, NV (“MMC”), will provide the engineering, procurement and construction contract (“EPC”) for the project, with a fixed-price (or maximum price guarantee), date certain construction agreement..
MMC has over 50 years of experience engineering and constructing major renewable and wastewater facilities. MMC is currently constructing five renewable energy facilities including two renewable diesel projects with PPG. Key Deal Attributes
SITE: The Project will be located on a 40- acre site in Rapid City, SD.
FEEDSTOCK: Long-Term Forest Stewardship contract with the Black Hills National Forest Service – FOB the harvest locations.
FUEL OFF-TAKE: The Company has received offers for binding fuel purchase agreements from two credit-worthy offtakers.
ECONOMIC BENEFITS FOR SD: The Project will create over 70 jobs at the plant including chemical engineering managers, skilled labor and entry-level workers. Because of the high jobs multiplier impact of the Project, for every job created at the plant, seven more jobs will be created in the community.
TECHNOLOGY: GTL and gasification process technologies proven in several other similar applications.
CONSTRUCTION: Fixed-price, fully wrapped EPC contract with experienced contractor containing provision for liquidated damages in event of late completion.
MANAGEMENT: Experienced waste conversion and renewable energy and fuels management team with executive and operational experience.
PERMITTING: Underway. No foreseen impediments to Project commencement.

Each year, forests throughout the Rocky Mountains States and California battle catastrophic forest fires due to disease, drought and climate change. The Company is currently working with foresters in South Dakota, Colorado, California and Montana and at the national level to help solve this problem. Our projects in each of these states will annually remove hundreds of thousands of tons of dry and diseased trees from our forests – thus removing the fuel for future forest fires. We will convert this forest waste to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
Our first project, sponsored by the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota, will convert Pine Beetle-killed trees and forest treatment slash to advanced synthetic fuels under a long-term Forest Stewardship contract.
